چکیده

The effect of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) on the crypt cell production rate in normal human duodenal mucosa cultured in vitro was studied using a stathmokinetic technique with crypt microdissection. The addition of 5-HT (2 mg/ml) to the culture medium significantly increased the crypt cell production rate (p < 000 1), suggesting that this amine may have a trophic effect on crypt cells in vitro. Increased synthesis and release of 5-HT from enterochromaffin cells in patients with coeliac disease may increase the crypt cell production rate and lead to a flattened small intestinal

CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS AND DIAGNOSIS OF CELIAC DISEASE IN CHILDREN

Celiac disease (CD) is defined as a permanent intolerance to gluten with clinical manifestations and abnormal small intestinal mucosa. A case series study was performed to obtain information about clinical manifestations, age of presentation and diagnosis of CD. For this purpose, hospital records of patients who were admitted to the gastrointestinal ward in the Children's Medical Center from 1...

Small intestinal function and dietary status in dermatitis herpetiformis.

Small intestinal morphology and function were assessed in 82 patients with dermatitis herpetiformis, 51 of whom were taking a normal diet and 31 a gluten free diet. Methods used were histopathological evaluation of jejunal mucosal biopsy specimens, quantitation of intraepithelial lymphocytes, cellobiose/mannitol permeability test, tissue disaccharidase values, serum antigliadin antibodies, and ...

Uniformity of dissecting microscope appearances in proximal small intestine.

The uniformity of mucosal morphology within the distal duodenum and the first loop of jejunum, ie, the area usually biopsied, was examined at necropsy in 116 children. In those with no evidence of gastrointestinal disease there was no significant variation within this area, but in 25 children with mucosal abnormality, variation occurred within a small area. The crests of the plicae circulares w...

[Immunoproliferative small intestinal disease associated with Campylobacter jejuni].

BACKGROUND Immunoproliferative small intestinal disease (also known as alpha chain disease) is a form of lymphoma that arises in small intestinal mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) and is associated with the expression of a monotypic truncated immunoglobulin alpha heavy chain without an associated light chain. Early-stage disease responds to antibiotics, suggesting a bacterial origin. We ...

Small bowel biopsy for malabsorption: comparison of the diagnostic adequacy of endoscopic forceps and capsule biopsy specimens.

Biopsy specimens of the small bowel were obtained from 40 patients suspected of having malabsorption. Four different techniques were used at a single session--namely, endoscopic biopsy of the descending duodenum using paediatric and standard size forceps and suction capsule biopsy of the descending duodenum and the proximal jejunum. Specimens were compared for size, adequacy, and ability to con...

The Electron Microscopy of Human Intestinal Epithelium Obtained with the Crosby Intestinal Biopsy Capsule

The recent development of small-bowel biopsy instruments (1, 2) has made fresh specimens of human intestinal mucosa readily available for histological examination. Previously such material was obtainable only at autopsy or at the time of abdominal surgery. These instruments have already provided specimens for histological studies of the intestinal mucosa under normal conditions and in malabsorp...
